Getting Married in New York City? A Complete Guide
So, you have decided to get married in the Big Apple; it’s the nickname of New York City! First of all, congratulation, that you have made a very important decision of your life!!! However, the process of getting married in NYC is very simple.
Getting married in NYC is a simple 3-step process.
- First, you have to submit an online application (optional; but will speed up the processing).
- Second, obtain a marriage license &
- Third, you get married!
Step 1: Online Application
Go to the following link: Marriage License Online Application . Fill up the form. Better to do it together because you will be needing information of your spouse’s parents. It will not take more than 10 mins to fill up the form. After submitting the application, you will receive a confirmation number via email. Keep the number, you will need it in order to complete the second step.
Step 2: Marriage License
So, where you need to go? The city marriage bureau of the City Clerk’s Office is located at 141 Worth Street, New York, NY, 10013.
Marriage Bureau Hours: 8:30 am to 3:45 pm, Monday through Friday.
(be careful about any holidays!)

Next, to obtain your license, both of you have to present at the bureau with valid IDs. Upon arriving at the bureau, you will face a security check. ( Do not carry any sharp object, scissors, or knives! ). After passing the security, you will see the reception desk. A receptionist will check your IDs and the reference number and will provide you a token.
You will be told to have a seat. On a screen, you will be able to see the token numbers that are being served. When your number is announced, you will see an officer. He/she will ask you for your IDs. You will able to see your online application and can make any necessary corrections if needed. You will have to pay $35 for the license (can by paid using cash, credit or debit card) . The officer will give a hard copy of the marriage license. Carefully check your marriage license to for any typos. The license is valid for 60 days! You will now have to wait at least 24- hour for the wedding ceremony.

Step 3: The Wedding Ceremony!
Both of you can come back to the office after 24-hour to get married. Make sure you bring the license, at least one witness with his/her ID. Don’t forget to bring flowers! If you forget, don’t worry. You will still able to buy flowers at the office. 😉
You will again receive a token and then you will be paying $25 for the wedding ceremony. After the payments are made, you will be waiting to see the clerk for the wedding! The clerk will call you and both of you and the witness will enter in the clerk’s room. He will perform the wedding ceremony, which will not take more than two minutes! And, finally you two become husband and wife for the rest of your life! You will also receive your marriage license on the same day.
