The capability to see through wall is like having a super power! Well, you can now use drones to have a X-ray vision! Using Wi-Fi equipped drones, you may able to achieve this superpower, which is an ongoing research conducted by University of California, Santa Barbaras’s electrical and computer engineering professor Yasamin Mostofi.
This technology can enhance many existing operations such as search-and-rescue, archaeological discovery and structural monitoring.
“Our proposed approach has enabled unmanned aerial vehicles to image details through walls in 3D with only WiFi signals,” said Mostofi. “This approach utilizes only WiFi RSSI measurements, does not require any prior measurements in the area of interest and does not need objects to move to be imaged.”
A publication on 3D through-wall imaging with wi-fi and drones has appeared in the Association for Computing Machinery/Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers International Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks (IPSN) in April, 2017.
So, who this technology actually works?
Two autonomous drones fly outside of an four-sided brick wall. The drones are not aware of the objects enclosed by the brick wall. While flying, one of the drones continuously transmit a Wifi signal. The other drone receives the transmitted power for 3-D imaging. After completing few rounds, the drones use the ‘method’ developed by the team to to reveal the area behind the wall and generate 3D high resolution images of the objects.
“However, enabling 3D through-wall imaging of real areas is considerably more challenging due to the considerable increase in the number of unknowns,” said Mostofi.
